I explain and incorporate Alasdair MacIntyre’s concept of virtue as a working definition throughout the essay to provide a basis to work from. For this reason, this paper maintains a balance of scholarly research in the field of virtue theory and breaking alike, while also relying on hip hop journalism and interview segments for primary evidence to support the claims. The nature of this essay privileges narrative and seeks to explore the breakdance community within its greater context of hip-hop culture. Community is important for the development of skills necessary to the practice of breakdance because it is a mentor based system of acquiring knowledge. This essay looks at breakdance culture through the lens of virtue theory to show how the value of community is intrinsic to breaking.
